Netscape Navigator Says Goodbye
The once popular but now rarely used web browser Netscape Navigator will no longer be supported after Feb 1st 2008. The browser, now owned by AOL, has seen a huge fall in the number of users, down to around 0.6% of Internet users worldwide. This is a stark contrast to the mid 90s when the browser was used by around 90% of net users.
The rise of Internet Explorer (bundled with Microsoft’s Windows OS) and Mozilla’s Firefox, have led to massively falling numbers of Netscape Navigator users and thus the developers have decided to cease development of the software.
“While internal groups within AOL have invested a great deal of time and energy in attempting to revive Netscape Navigator, these efforts have not been successful in gaining market share from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer,” said Tom Drapeau on the company’s blog.
It’s sad to see such an old browser disappear, but it has been coming for a long time. Firefox is getting more popular every day, and Microsoft are working hard to improve Internet Explorer with every new release.
