Nokia battery problems BL-5C

Mobile phone giants, Nokia, are replacing up to 46 million batteries for mobile phones that they have manufactured, after reports of overheating problems whilst charging.

The problem batteries have been identified as BL-5C batteries, made for Nokia by Matsushita between December 2005 and November 2006. You can check to see if your battery is affected by going to the Nokia website. They have a very helpful checker that will allow you to enter your battery’s serial number.

Nokia have said there have been around 100 reports of batteries overheating and that the battery in question is used in over 50 of their different handsets. In a statement they said: “Nokia has identified that in very rare cases the affected batteries could potentially experience overheating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge.” They also made it clear that there had been no reports of “serious injury or property damage” as a result of the overheating.

Jyske analyst, Soren Linde Nielsen told Reuters news agency – “I think this will hurt Nokia’s brand a lot and that’s the most precious asset Nokia has.”

Have any readers got an affected battery? I’m curious as to Nokia’s process of replacement.

i have heard that it will burst out due to the internal faults or the production itself is affected!

whats the problem?

Hi Ashok,

The problem is with the way the batteries were manufactured. There is a small risk of the battery being short circuited whilst charging, which could lead to the battery becoming dislodged.

The battery shouldn’t “burst out”, as that would be quite a violent reaction, but I would expect that due to overheating it would expand and cause the back cover of the phone to come out of place.

If you have one of the BL-5C batteries, I’d strongly advise going to the website in the article and making sure you aren’t affected. Better to be safe than sorry!

i have bl-5c battery and i would like to get it change

when i charged the battery,it work only 6 hours

Dinesh, I’d speak to your local Nokia service centre. That doesn’t sound right. Did you make sure that you charged the battery completely before using the phone?
